This is such a great way to see how one sketch or template can look so different by the time each person finishes with it.

Instructions:
1. Right click and save on jpg image
2. Open document in Photoshop
3. Create new document 12x12
4. Drag the sketch image onto new document
5. Close sketch image
6. Enlarge image to fit page
7. Keep this as your bottom layer.
8. Begin to use this as your template for creating.

I like to work with the "group with previous" feature in PSE6 so after doing as Sonya says, I used the magic wand and made layers of each section in the template and then proceded to make my page using the group with and merge down features.

I used to use the edit-paste in selection method with the flattened templates but now prefer the layer-group with previous. Both are great ways to do pages and each has its own merits. I was just so glad to learn the second method, I use it a lot now when doing pages and creating kits, etc.

Rhonda you might want to explain how for those who might be new to scrap'n or haven't learned this yet. ;)

Sure, I can only do it for PSE since that is what I work with. Do you want it here in this thread or as a Tutorial? I haven't really written tut's but I suppose I could write a simplified one.

I was thinking here but maybe a tut isn't a bad idea. Do you want to do that? A simplified one would be a great first.

Hi Andrea. I forgot about this thread and that I was going to write some instructions.

Simplified Tut on using the Group with Previous technique to do a sketch using PSE.

1. Duplicate sketch and rename it your page

2. Starting with the bottom layer click on it to select it.

3. Import your paper or photo above that layer by adding it to the page. If you had selected the layer you wanted that paper to be, ie.background first then it should appear just above the layer you wish to make that paper.

4. I now click ctrl and G to get the group with previous function. You can also select it by going to layers and scrolling down to group with previous.

5. Now the layer has moved over with a little down arrow and you can see your paper in the space of the previous layer. You can resize your paper or photo and move it around to get the part you want and how you like it fitting it exactly in the space of the previous layer you are trying to cover.

6. You can leave it like this for now so you can adjust it later if you like. If you don't like that paper or element there you can add another one over in the same manner and by clicking on the eye icon to the left of the arrow compare your choices.

7. Move to the next layer you want to color or change. I always start from the bottom layer up and just bring in papers and photos using this same technique moving and resizing the imported paper or photo until I get it just right on the space provided. This works from a large item all the way down to a very small shape on the template.

8. If you are sure of the choice you have made for a space you can merge the two layers together but once you do this you cannot change that it. I merge by highlighting the upper layer and going to layers and merging down. You may have shortcuts you have learned for this. Or you can highlight the two layers and merge them either by going to layers and clicking on merge layers. There are other ways you merge but I am writing this quickly with a sleepy 20month old in my lap so I need to go to my editor for this.
