Sonya, I would love to learn how to use my new SLR, get it off the auto mode and learn to adjust the manual setting, they just don't make any sense to me, I have gone out on the internet and looked at all the videos and tutorials that I could find and I still can't get my head rapped around ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Is there an easy way to learn this, or will I forever be stuck on auto mode?

Hi Jodee. It's nice to see you. Sonya, is the person to help with the photography questions, but I just wanted to say that wrapping your head around the manual settings is going to be much easier than you think. I found it was better to take everything in steps. I'm still learning but I'm really having fun with it all.

I find lighting to be a big challenge for me.
Sometimes, it doesn't matter what I set it on, it isn't right.
The other thing,...is getting the external flash to co-operate.
Oh, I have a lot to learn with that.

Jodee...I'm glad you posted something here. Sometimes I think I assume that others are where I'm at in the learning process. Believe it or not, I remember being there where you are and thinking will I ever understand that "language". I find that with desire to learn it will come. I remember doing what you mentioned by reading, videos and tuts and eventually the "language" started becoming more clear. The other thing is practicing. That combination is what I found worked for me. Sometimes I would even talk to my self as I made those adjustment to my camera. I'm still learning and still practicing.

After I get this site up and running, my goal is to work on doing more with this. I thought if we did little assignments that we can post our experiences here and share what the results were.

You know M...it's that indoor lighting that I still struggle with. Now outdoor lighting that seems natural to me.

I am glued to the auto settings like a pacifier...I so want to learn how to be more comfortable with the manual and I have such a good camera to use. My Digital SLR doesn't have an attached flash and I had so much trouble with the timing on the external flash and settings that I just don't use that camera if I need a flash...so sad...because it is a pro camera and I am wasting it!

Many years ago I took photos with the manual settings but I just had a set combination I worked with. I have never understood aperture and shutter speed enough. I am determined though to learn so hope we can do something with it here!

I wish I could afford an DSLR now. I miss my old SLR. For now I use my fugi Finpix which is a bit better than the point and shoot, but not the same at all.
